big ideas that will make you go "hmmm…"

music-monkeys-largeThe Times Magazine recently shared, from A to Z, “the most clever, important, silly and just plain weird innovations we carried back from all corners of the thinking world” in the arts, business, culture, design, health, natural science, politics & policy, social science, sports and technology.

you’ll be surprised at what some of the BIG IDEAS are that have sprouted from the collective minds of our thought leaders.

i parsed through ‘The 9th Annual Year in Ideas‘ and highlighted below of some of the “big ideas” that will make you go “hmmm…”:

  • music for monkeys - if our response to the “emotional vocalizations,” pulses and heartbeats that we first hear in the womb establishes our sense of music, then we should “be able to write music for another species that’s effective for that species.” this notion prompted David Teie, a celloist with the National Symphony Orchestra, to conduct a musical experiment on cotton-top tamarin monkies to see if they’ll respond to “species-specific music.” the results? the monkeys responded profoundly to Teie’s music, with threat-based pieces leading to “tongue-flicking, head-cocking, scratching,” and other signs of anxiety, while the calming music “increased foraging behavior, eating and drinking.” cats and mustached bats are next to enjoy the music.

hanging ten with google wave: real-time mass communication

google wave is one of the hottest trending topics in the twittersphere right now, but what exactly is it? why do you want an invitation? who else is riding the wave out there?

Google-Wave-1to start, it’s important to understand what google wave is not: it’s not e-mail, or instant messaging, or a Web chat system, or a message board, or a collaborative-document system — it’s a hybrid of many features from all of those things.

as the next “big” communication thing, google wave allows users to share conversations or documents in real-time that everyone in the “wave” can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and invite additional participants into the process at any point.

everyone in the wave can share photos, embed videos, and converge other google applications such as google maps and google calendar to create customized blocks of user-editable content on the fly. and since waves are live, all participants on the same page, keystroke to keystroke.

not yet one of the lucky 100,000 or so people who’ve been invited to check out google wave? contact us for an invitation. we have a limited number to share with our readers. if you’re already a waver, you can hang ten with us: yellow peril media.
